Managing Cigarette Cravings

Quitting smoking can be a tough task for anyone to take on. It doesn’t matter if you have been smoking for two years or 20, getting rid of the addiction is a timely and patient process. Staying motivated not to light up can take a toll on someone when they’ve had a stressful day or are craving the nicotine.

This is the most common issue with quitting smoking. Your body wants the nicotine, and is like a girl scout at the front door selling free cookies; it’s right there all you have to do is take action. It is important you don’t feed into the temptation! You’ve made great progress so far, and you don’t want to ruin it! Here are some helpful ways to curb those cigarette cravings.

Exercise

If you are bored, sitting around, wishing you had a cigarette in your fingers, get up! Get outside and go for a walk or jog. Exercise will take the edge off of the smoke from your body and more about the physical activity you are enduring.  

Eat

Sometimes distracting your mouth is an easy way to curb the craving. You want it to be a healthy choice though so eat an apple or granola bar. If you’re not hungry, drink a glass of water or chew some gum. Anything to keep that jaw busy!

Call a Friend

Having a support system is a great help when a craving just doesn’t seem to go away. Call up a buddy who may be going through the same thing or just someone to talk. Hearing some words of encouragement and advice will guide you to a better alternative.

Write Down Reasons for Quitting

Sometimes quitting isn’t enough until you see the reasons why you quit in the first place. Have a piece of paper on you with the list of reasons why you wanted to end your smoking lifestyle. This can be a huge motivator for yourself to power through this pain.

No matter what remember that it gets better every day! Stay strong and don’t give in to temptation.
